From what began as just another struggling rock band to being the opening band on 2003’s See Spot Rock Tour with other major Christian rock heavyweights, modern rock hit makers Sanctus Real have come a long way in their career. In 2003, Christianity Today named them a top pick for Best New Artist, as well as naming “Fight the Tide” the Best Album of 2004. As if that wasn’t enough, Sanctus Real have also received multiple Dove nominations and recently scored their fifth #1 single with “Don’t Give Up” from their critically acclaimed album The Face of Love. The band has officially returned once again for their fourth effort We Need Each Other, an album which the band describes as “coming together as the body of Christ, unifying to see God’s work done through us.”
Lyrically speaking, this album might be by far Sanctus Real’s best album to date, presenting themes of inner beauty, unity, and spiritual warfare. We Need Each Other gets the ball rolling with a bluesy rock number titled “Turn On the Lights” with a featured guest appearance by producer/artist Pete Yorn. Melodies are aplenty with lush arrangements shown in the mellower “Something Heavenly” and the following uptemo track “Sing.” One noteable highlight is the tender “Lay Down My Guns,” a song about laying down one’s burdens and giving full surrender to God when the weight of the world seems to be too heavy on his heart. With the exception of the gutsy rocker “Leap of Faith,” most of the second half of We Need Each Other remains in the vein of softer but well arranged harmonies.
With an accompanying spring tour with Third Day, Sanctus Real continues to impress with each album they release. These guys have an unwavering faith in the Creator and have a consistent passion in spreading the Good News to their faithful listeners. Not ones to water down their faith, Sanctus Real has the potential to take their message and music worldwide, winning over new fans with every performance. Don’t pass up the opportunity to own one of the best new Christian rock albums of 2008. | Production | 9 | | Lyrics | 9 | | Message | 10 | | Overall Quality 9 | Release Date: February 26, 2008 Label: Sparrow Records
