Anyone who remembers the 70’s era of rock n’ roll can easily recall the hard rock influences of bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, and Deep Purple. What might not be easy to notice is what would happen if former members of all three bands became Christians and decided to form an entirely new band in the 21st Century. The result would be the all-American trio from San Diego known as Thieves and Liars. This band is the premiere signing of blues/rock based label Dreamt Music and is dedicated to reviving a period where rock music was based primarily on musicianship and talent rather than pure spectacle and pushing the controversial envelope.
Thieves and Liars’ label debut “When Dreams Become Reality” is a 71 minute epic adventure recapturing the life story of Genesis character Joseph, who went from shepherd boy to king in less than twenty years of his life. The album begins with a seven minute Pink Floyd-esque ballad titled “The Dream,” which describes Joseph’s early years of receiving visions from God, whereas the following track “Betrayed By Blood” picks up the pace musically and recounts Joseph’s tragic story of being stripped of his multicolored coat and nearly left for dead. The band’s scorching plethora of classic rock begins to take control with the ode-to-slavery rocker “Slavin Away” and the even rougher title track later on in the album. However, in the band’s mellower moments, a Stradivarius violin calmly accentuates the soothing track “Forgotten,” with a blues driven feel setting the mood for “Seven Long Years.”
Sadly, Thieves and Liars is moreless an acquired taste, depending on one’s music preferences. While fans of 70’s rock will find an easy favorite on “When Dreams Become Reality,” those of the grunge and alternative metal generation may not discover this band as an amazing piece of work and could assume that they waited too long to bring back a seasoned genre. Moreover, others may easily dismiss them as being musical copycats with no original substance and lack creativity. Technicalities aside, bands like Thieves and Liars are big risk takers when it comes to crafting rock and roll that at times should be left to its originators. If nothing more, this band is determined to embrace their musical influences to be incorporated into their own music regardless of the public’s viewpoint. Hopefully, Thieves and Liars will be able to bring forth a more modernized and innovative genre all their own in the coming years. | Production | 7 | | Lyrics | 7 | | Message | 8 | | Overall Quality 7 | Release Date: January 22, 2008 Label: Facedown Records/Dreamt Music
