At first glimpse, thrash metal-core band A Plea for Purging might sound like a been there done that act. But when considering the fact that their influences include the likes of Dragonforce, Iron Maiden, and Everytime I Die, APFP is definitely a band shouldn’t pass up at the major retailers. Having cranked out two hundred shows in their first year as a band and even known to breathe fire at some of their shows as mentioned by vocalist Andy Atkins, A Plea for Purging is one metal band that is far from stopping their gut wrenching chaos.

Hot of the heels of the band’s EP “Steady is the Action, Quick is the Word” is their full length debut “A Critique of Mind and Thought,” an album chock full of furious guitar breakdowns and plenty of double bass kicks that scream the need for a power metal masterpiece. Like War of Ages, A Plea for Purging enjoys keeping their message primarily in the book of Revelation with titles such as “The Slaying of the Serpentine Dragon,” “While the Sparrow Sleeps,” and “Resurrection of the Beast.” Several face melting anthems encompass the majority of “A Critique of Mind and Thought,” while informing the listener of end time prophecy. One minor drawback is that lead singer Atkins at times sounds like he is forcing out many of his screams, which puts quite a strain on one’s voice after a long period of time.

The music that is A Plea for Purging will keep fans of metal banging their heads and dancing for hours on end due to the plethora of sonic guitar melodies and solos throughout the album. One particular highlight is “Death Has Been Swallowed Up in Victory,” which sounds like a cross between The Darkness and Christmas themed pop/nu-metal act Transiberian Orchestra, an odd sounding combo but nevertheless unique and amazing. The drumming techniques Aaron Eckerman are swift and impetuous, pouring on layer upon layer of non-stop beat explosions. In regards to lyricism, it’s best for one to read the liner notes themselves to fully comprehend the message of spiritual warfare that A Plea for Purging proudly boasts.

A Plea for Purging’s “A Critique of Mind and Thought” is a metal head’s dream, blending together well crafted lyrics and boisterous musical arrangements from beginning to end. While over productions presents a minor technicality in some songs, A Plea for Purging has the drive and emotion to win over any fan of the current bunch of popular metal bands circling the United States and worldwide.
